Ketosis
Understanding what your blood-ketone number means:
- “Nutritional ketosis” begins at 0.5 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)
- “Optimal Zone” is 1.8“
- Fasting Ketosis” is 3.5
- “Starvation Ketosis” is 7.0
- And “Ketoacidosis” is 10

Dr. Boz Ratio
Dr. Annette Bosworth has come up with a way to help gauge where you’re at with your ketosis. She puts things in easy-to-understand terms.
To get the ratio, divide your blood ketone reading into your blood glucose reading. How to interpret the resulting number:
- Less Than 80: is a good number for “weight loss” (might get some autophagy)
- Less Than 40: is a good number for “immune system” (solid chance for autophagy)
- Less Than 20: is good number for battling “cancer” (best chance for autophagy)
Example: If your blood glucose number is 70 and your blood ketone number is 2.0, then your Dr. Boz Ratio number is 35, which puts you in the “immune system” category.
