HDL - Good Cholesterol
HDL proteins transport fat out of your arteries.
Understanding what your HDL number means:
- If you’re a man and your number is between 35 and 65 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), then you’re considered “normal”; for a woman that range is 35 to 80
- Less than 25, and your risk for coronary heart disease is doubled
- Between 60 and 74, and your risk is “below normal”
Triglycerides
Triglycerides are, simply, fats carried in the blood.
Understanding what your triglycerides number means:
- If, after 8 hours of fasting (AKA a good night’s sleep), your blood test reveals your number to be less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), then you’re considered “normal”
- 150 to 199, and you’re “borderline”
- 200 to 499, and you’re “high”
- 500 and higher, and your risk is “very high” for stroke or heart attack
